Coach Jason

Being the first and so far the only Marathon Maniac (#8951) in Sabah, Jason Ku has trained to compete in more than 20 competitive events including cross country, 5km, 10km, half marathon to marathon and back to back marathons within 16 hours.

From a nobody in the running community

Jason began taking running seriously in June 2013 when a couple of his best friends came over from out of state to compete in the biggest local running event, Borneo International Marathon.  That year, the event was being postponed from April to August.  After coming over to collect their race packs in April, Jason's running friends planned to come again in August to run the event.  At that time, Jason was totally uninterested in long distance running.  But being a prankster by nature, Jason started training for the 10k without his best friends knowledge in order to surprise the when they come back to run the event in August.  The prank turned running into a real passion for Jason and from then on, he never looked back.  With a time of 75 minutes in his first 10km, he now runs it the sub 52 minutes, sub 2 hours for half marathon and sub 4:30 for full marathon.  He went on to compete in various 10km, half marathons, marathons races. His personal best for 10k is 49 minutes, 21k at 1hr 49mins and 42k at 3hr 59mins.

Running to improve quality of life

This running thing has meant a lot to Jason in the past 3 years.  And it’s not just been his running. Sharing the experience with others and mentoring/coaching along the way has given him the opportunity to see the positive effects running has had in other people’s lives.  Whether it has been for weight-loss, general health and fitness, goal accomplishments, or just for “me” time, running has been that one thing to which so many people can stick with. It’s cost effective. It can be done just about anywhere. It can be a social thing or a time to reflect inwardly. Running just works.
